FAQ
QUESTION. What is a waterless urinal?
ANSWER. A waterless urinal is one that does not flush. There are several types of ‘waste traps’ all of which require regular maintenance and daily cleaning. Currently in Australia the designs used in waterless urinals are an oil barrier system, plastic sleeve and a siphon waste trap
QUESTION. How much water do they save?
ANSWER. Flushing urinals can use up to 8-9 litres of water per flush, other systems flush by a timer or sensor system, which can lead to large amounts of water being flushed away each day. Each waterless urinal saves approximately 70,000 litres of water per year. Add up each urinal you have and you can see approximately how much water you save per annum.
QUESTION. Where are waterless urinals installed?
ANSWER. Waterless urinals are installed in various commercial buildings such as office buildings, sports centres, restaurants, schools, Universities, military establishments, entertainment centres, local council amenity centres, shopping centres and many more. Anywhere there is a bathroom a waterless urinals can be installed.
QUESTION. What are the benefits of waterless urinals?
ANSWER. Waterless urinals are more hygienic than conventional flushing systems mainly because bacteria and fungi require a moist surface to live in. Waterless urinals do not require a rim around the top of the bowl which can harness bacteria, and if not cleaned properly will become a breeding ground. Each time a urinal is flushed bacteria is released into the air and spread around the bathroom.
QUESTION. How do waterless urinals get cleaned?
ANSWER. Waterless urinals are cleaned on a daily basis just like flushing ones. No harsh chemicals or bleaches are to be used in the process. The Delron Service Technician trains the on-site daily cleaners correct cleaning procedures.
QUESTION. What maintenance do my waterless urinals require?
ANSWER. As per the manufacturers recommendations and plumbing regulations all waterless urinals require maintenance of the waste traps. A service schedule is done up for your business depending on the type of urinal, drainage design and usage patterns. Once a service schedule is done for your business our Service Technician will visit your business on a regular basis and leave your bathroom fresh and hygienic for all visitors and staff.
QUESTION. What happens if I don’t have the urinal serviced?
ANSWER. One challenge that develops in incorrectly serviced waterless urinals is the formation of Struvite (magnesium ammonium phosphate) within the urinal cartridge and waste drain. Struvite is a crystalline structure that forms on the fittings of the urinal cartridge and in the piping immediately downstream of the waterless urinal. Struvite poses a genuine health risk to the users and causes major blockages when not properly serviced.

These pictures show Struvite in pipes when correct servicing is not engaged. We are specialists in preventing this from occurring.
The National Plumbers Regulators Forum has released amendments to the Plumbing and Drainage Standard AS/NZS 3500.2: 2003 Part 2: Sanitary plumbing and drainage, addressing maintenance of waterless urinals. “At this stage it is recommended that facility owners and managers arrange for waterless urinals be inspected and serviced at periods of no less than 3 months, until a more appropriate maintenance interval can be established for each facility.
